Why teams look past Claude
Searching for Claude alternatives usually starts with a specific frustration, not a wish to switch for its own sake. Claude is a strong assistant, and most teams that look elsewhere are not unhappy with the answers. They are reacting to the seat model, the ecosystem, or a compliance question. Anthropic’s pricing page lists Team plans for 2 to 150 people, with Standard seats at $20 per user per month on annual billing ($25 monthly) and Premium seats at $100 ($125 monthly). Enterprise is annual only, at a $20 seat price plus usage billed at API rates. That mix suits some buyers and surprises others.
Three reasons come up most often when a team compares options:
- Ecosystem fit. If your documents live in Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, an assistant built into those tools removes a copy-and-paste step from every task.
- Data control. Some regulated teams need the model to run in their own cloud or data center, not in a vendor’s multi-tenant service.
- Job fit. A research assistant, a coding agent, and a general chat assistant are different products, and one subscription rarely covers all three well.
The prices below were read from each vendor’s own pricing page on October 8, 2026. They change often, so confirm on the vendor page before you buy.
The 8 alternatives at a glance
Whether you think of them as Claude competitors or as a Claude AI alternative for work, these eight cover the main buying paths: general assistants, suite-native assistants, research tools, private-deployment platforms, and coding tools.
| Alternative | Best for | Listed business price (Oct 8, 2026) | Data stance (per vendor page) |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Business | General assistant for mixed teams | Per user per month, 2+ users, billed annually or monthly. Amount varies by region | No training on business data by default; SAML SSO and MFA |
| Gemini in Workspace | Teams already on Google Workspace | Included in Workspace Starter and above; Gemini depth rises with the plan | Enterprise-grade security and privacy for Gemini on Starter and above |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot | Teams already on Microsoft 365 | $18 add-on (promo), $23.50 or $32 bundled, per user per month, paid yearly | Chat connected to work data; needs a qualifying Microsoft 365 plan |
| Perplexity Enterprise | Cited research and market lookups | $34 per seat per month annual (Enterprise Pro), $271 (Max) | No training on your data; SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, GDPR, PCI DSS stated |
| Mistral Le Chat | Teams that want a self-host path | $14.99 Pro, $24.99 Team per user per month; Enterprise custom | Enterprise offers self-hosted, private cloud, or on-premises deployment |
| Cohere North | Agents on private infrastructure | Not published | Runs in your VPC, on-premises, or through Cohere Model Vault |
| Cursor | Developers who want an AI-first editor | $20 individual, $40 per user Teams (listed) | Enterprise tier with pooled usage |
| GitHub Copilot | Developers already on GitHub | Pro $10, Pro+ $39, Max $100 per month; Business and Enterprise by quote | Cloud coding agent and CLI included on paid individual plans |
1. ChatGPT Business
ChatGPT Business is the closest like-for-like swap for a general assistant. OpenAI’s pricing page lists it for teams of two or more, billed annually or monthly, with centralized billing, usage analytics, budgeting and spend controls, SAML SSO, and MFA. It states that business data is not used for training by default and lets teams connect Microsoft 365, Google Drive, Slack, GitHub, Linear, and Figma.
Enterprise adds SCIM, enterprise key management, role-based access controls, custom data retention, 24/7 priority support, and data residency in ten regions. The price on the page depends on your region, so we are not quoting a dollar figure here. Pick it when you want one broad assistant with the widest connector list. Skip it when your documents sit entirely inside Microsoft or Google and you would rather have the assistant live there.
2. Gemini in Google Workspace
Google does not sell Gemini for work as a separate chat product. It arrives inside Workspace. On the Business Starter plan, Gemini is included in Gmail and Vids, with limited use in other Workspace apps, and Google states enterprise-grade security and privacy for Gemini. On Business Standard, Gemini is included in Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Vids, Drive, Meet, and Chat, with expanded access to its most capable models.
Google’s pricing page showed local-currency prices when we read it, so we are not quoting dollars. Pick it when your team already lives in Docs, Sheets, and Meet. Skip it when your core files are in Microsoft formats, because the value comes from working inside Google’s apps.
3. Microsoft 365 Copilot
Microsoft sells Copilot three ways on its pricing page: Microsoft 365 Business Standard with Copilot at $23.50 per user per month, Business Premium with Copilot at $32, and Microsoft 365 Copilot Business as an $18 add-on. All prices are per user per month, paid yearly.
The $18 price is a promotion. It applies to the first year for purchases made July 1 through December 31, 2026, requires an annual commitment, and is limited to existing Microsoft 365 Business customers (the regular price is $21). Copilot Chat is available at no additional cost with eligible Microsoft 365 plans, and users without a Copilot license can try it by signing in with a work account. Pick it when Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams are where the work happens. Skip it when your team is not on Microsoft 365, since the add-on needs a qualifying plan.
4. Perplexity Enterprise
Perplexity is built around cited answers. Its Enterprise Pro plan lists at $34 per seat per month billed annually, and Enterprise Max at $271 per seat per month billed annually. Both state that customer data is not used to train AI models, and Perplexity lists SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, GDPR, and PCI DSS compliance with SSO, SCIM, audit logs, and data retention controls. Enterprise Pro adds premium citation sources including PitchBook and Statista.
Pick it when your work is research, market scans, and sourced briefs. Skip it when you need an assistant to draft long documents inside your office suite, which is not where it is strongest.
5. Mistral Le Chat
Mistral’s plans list Pro at $14.99 and Team at $24.99 per user per month, with Team adding higher limits, up to 30 GB of storage per user, domain verification, and data export. Enterprise is quote-based and adds custom models, agents, audit logs, SAML SSO, and white labeling, plus self-hosted, private cloud, or on-premises deployment where data stays in your environment.
One licensing detail matters if you plan to self-host the open-weight models: Mistral’s FAQ says they are Apache 2.0 licensed for research or individual use, and commercial deployments require a separate Mistral license. Pick it when data residency or a self-host path is a hard requirement. Skip it when you want the largest connector library out of the box.
6. Cohere North
North is Cohere’s enterprise agent platform. Its page describes agents that can reach your organization’s knowledge, natural-language automations, reusable skills, shared libraries, memory, guardrails, and an admin panel. It can run in your own VPC, on-premises, or through Cohere’s Model Vault, under a zero-trust security framework.
Cohere does not publish pricing on this page, so expect a sales conversation. Pick it when you are building agents that must run on private infrastructure. Skip it when you want to sign up with a card today.
7. Cursor
Many searches for Claude alternatives are really searches for Claude Code alternatives. Cursor is an AI-first code editor. Its pricing page lists an individual plan at $20 per month and Teams at $40 per user per month, with Enterprise on pooled usage. Usage beyond what a plan includes is billed on demand in arrears.
Pick it when developers want an editor that edits across files and runs agents inside the IDE. Skip it when your team lives in the terminal and wants to stay there.
8. GitHub Copilot
GitHub lists Copilot Pro at $10 per month, Pro+ at $39, and Max at $100 in USD. Each plan includes a monthly pool of AI credits (1 credit equals $0.01), and the cloud coding agent and Copilot CLI are included on paid individual plans. A free plan exists with limited usage. Business and Enterprise are by quote.
Pick it when your code, reviews, and issues are already on GitHub. Skip it when your team uses a different Git host and wants a single editor-first experience.
How to choose
| If this is true | Start with |
|---|---|
| Your team works in Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams | Microsoft 365 Copilot |
| Your team works in Docs, Sheets, Gmail, and Meet | Gemini in Workspace |
| You need one broad assistant with many connectors | ChatGPT Business |
| Your output is cited research | Perplexity Enterprise |
| Data must stay in your cloud or data center | Mistral Enterprise or Cohere North |
| Developers drive the purchase | Cursor or GitHub Copilot |
Before committing, run a two-week trial with the three tasks your team repeats most, and score each assistant on the same prompts. Check three contract points: whether business data is excluded from training, where data is stored, and what happens to cost when usage spikes. The last one matters because several plans bill usage on top of the seat price.
When no off-the-shelf assistant fits
Buying seats of a general assistant does not automate a workflow. If the real goal is an assistant that reads your CRM, answers support tickets, or updates your ERP, a custom agent is usually the better route. Our guide to building an AI agent for your business walks through scope and cost, and our review of the best AI agents for business covers ready-made options by function. If you want a team to build one, see our agentic AI development services and AI development services.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there any AI better than Claude?
It depends on the job. ChatGPT Business has the widest connector list, Gemini and Microsoft 365 Copilot work inside the office suites many teams already use, and Perplexity is built for cited research. No single assistant wins every task, so test two or three on your own prompts for two weeks.
Are there free alternatives to Claude?
Yes. ChatGPT, Mistral Le Chat, and GitHub Copilot each list a free plan with limited usage, and Cursor lists a free Hobby plan with limited agent requests. Free plans carry usage caps and are not designed for team use, so move to a business plan before you put company data in.
What are the downsides of Claude for a business team?
The ones buyers raise are structural, not about answer quality. Team plans cover 2 to 150 people, Premium seats cost $125 per user per month on monthly billing versus $25 for Standard, and Enterprise is annual only with usage billed at API rates. If you work mainly inside Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, an assistant built into those apps may fit better.
Is ChatGPT or Claude better for business?
Neither is better for every team. ChatGPT Business lists SAML SSO, MFA, no training on business data by default, and connectors for Microsoft 365, Google Drive, Slack, and GitHub. Claude Team lists central billing, SSO, and no training on your content by default. Compare them on your own documents, not on feature lists.
Which Claude alternative is best for coding?
Cursor and GitHub Copilot are the two most common choices. Cursor is an AI-first editor with a $20 individual plan and a $40 per user Teams plan. GitHub Copilot starts at $10 per month, includes a cloud coding agent and CLI on paid individual plans, and fits teams already on GitHub.
Which alternative is best if data must stay private?
Mistral Enterprise and Cohere North are the two in this list that document self-hosted, VPC, or on-premises deployment. ChatGPT Enterprise offers data residency in ten regions, which keeps data in a chosen region but not in your own infrastructure.
Can I self-host a Claude alternative?
Mistral lists self-hosted, private cloud, and on-premises deployment for Enterprise customers, and says its open-weight models can be self-hosted. Commercial deployments of those models require a separate Mistral license. Cohere North runs in your VPC or on-premises.
What is the cheapest business alternative to Claude?
Among the prices we verified on October 8, 2026, Microsoft 365 Copilot Business at $18 per user per month is the lowest, but it is a first-year promotion that requires an existing Microsoft 365 Business plan. Mistral Team at $24.99 and Claude Team Standard at $25 on monthly billing ($20 annual) are close. Compare total cost including usage billing, not just the seat price.
Is there anything better than Claude for research?
Perplexity Enterprise is the research-focused option here. It lists cited answers, premium sources including PitchBook and Statista on Enterprise Pro, and a no-training commitment for customer data.
Bottom Line
The best Claude alternative is the one that sits where your team already works. Microsoft and Google shops should look at Copilot and Gemini first, research teams at Perplexity, regulated teams at Mistral or Cohere, and developers at Cursor or GitHub Copilot. Run a short trial, read the data terms line by line, and confirm today’s price on the vendor page. If none of them can reach your own systems, talk to us about a custom agent through our agentic AI development services.
