What are the best AI apps?

The best AI apps depend on the job. For general work, an assistant such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Microsoft Copilot. For research with sources, Perplexity or Google’s notebook tool. For writing, Grammarly or Notion AI. For images, Adobe Firefly. For code, GitHub Copilot. For connecting apps and automating tasks, Zapier or Make. Start with one assistant and one tool for your most repeated task, and keep a free tier until the work proves the upgrade.

  • Pick by job, not by brand: assistants, research, writing, design, coding and automation are different tools, and most people need two or three, not ten.
  • Claude lists Free at $0, Pro at $17 a month on annual billing or $20 monthly, and Max from $100. Notion lists Free, Plus at $10 and Business at $20 per member, with the AI agent and meeting notes on Business. Microsoft 365 Copilot is listed at $21 per user per month, or $18 in a promotion through December 31, 2026.
  • Free tiers are real but limited. Claude, Notion, Grammarly and GitHub Copilot all have free plans, and Grammarly’s free plan includes 100 AI prompts a month against 2,000 on Plus.
  • We could not verify current US dollar prices for ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity from their pages, so this guide describes them without quoting a price. Check the vendor page before you buy.
  • Prices were read in October 2026 and change often. Business data settings, integrations and mobile apps matter as much as the model.
  • CommercePundit builds custom AI apps and agents for company data. See the last section.

Which AI apps are worth using?

There are thousands of AI apps, and most are thin wrappers around the same few models. The ones worth your time either come from the model makers or solve one job well. This guide groups the best AI apps by what you do with them, and says where we could not verify a price.

Job Apps to start with Why
General assistant ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot Answer questions, draft, summarize, analyze files
Research with sources Perplexity, Google’s notebook tool Answers with citations, or answers grounded in your own documents
Writing and editing Grammarly, Notion AI Rewrite, fix tone, and draft inside the place you write
Images and design Adobe Firefly Generate and edit images with licensed training data
Code GitHub Copilot Completions and chat in the editor
Automation Zapier, Make Connect apps and run tasks without code

What are the best AI assistant apps?

ChatGPT

ChatGPT is the most widely known assistant and a safe default for drafting, brainstorming and analysis. OpenAI also sells team plans. We could not verify US dollar prices from its pricing page, so check it directly. For an honest comparison of the field, see our Claude alternatives guide, which covers ChatGPT, Gemini and others on price and data terms.

Claude

Claude is Anthropic’s assistant. Anthropic lists a Free plan at $0, Pro at $17 a month billed annually ($200 a year) or $20 monthly, and Max from $100 a month. Pro adds higher usage limits, Projects for organizing chats and documents, access to more models including Opus, and Claude Code. It is a strong choice for long documents and careful writing.

Gemini

Gemini is Google’s assistant. Google sells it through Google AI plans (Plus, Pro and Ultra) that bundle Gemini access with storage across Gmail, Drive and Photos. The plans page we could read did not show US dollar prices, so confirm the price in the Google One app. It fits people who already live in Google Workspace.

Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft 365 Copilot works inside Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams. It is listed at $21 per user per month, with an $18 promotional price through December 31, 2026. It fits teams on Microsoft 365. Our Microsoft Copilot alternatives guide compares it with the other options.

Which AI apps are best for research?

Perplexity answers questions with cited sources, which makes checking claims faster than with a plain chat answer. Google’s notebook tool, which appears on Google’s plans page as Gemini Notebook, answers from documents you upload, which suits reading a stack of reports. We could not verify Perplexity’s US prices, so check its page. For a ranking of tools built for search, read our best AI search engines guide, and for browsers with AI built in, best AI browsers.

Which AI apps help most with writing?

Grammarly fixes grammar, rewrites sentences and adjusts tone where you already write. Its free plan includes 100 AI prompts, and the paid Plus plan includes 2,000 prompts. The page we read showed rupee prices, so check US pricing. Notion AI writes, summarizes and searches inside a workspace. Notion lists Free at $0, Plus at $10 and Business at $20 per member, with the Notion Agent and AI meeting notes on Business and only a limited AI trial on Free and Plus. For email specifically, see our AI email assistants guide.

Which AI apps help with images, code and automation?

  • Adobe Firefly generates images and design assets. Adobe says it trains on licensed Adobe Stock and public domain content, and its paid plans are listed at $9.99, $19.99 and $49.99.
  • GitHub Copilot suggests code and answers questions in the editor, with a free tier that includes 2,000 completions.
  • Zapier lists a Professional plan from $19.99 for 750 tasks, and Make lists a plan at $9 with 5,000 credits. Both connect apps so the AI output goes somewhere useful.

For ready-made automations built around these apps, see our AI workflow automation tools and AI tools for small business guides.

What are the best free AI apps?

Several of the apps above have usable free plans: Claude Free, Notion Free, Grammarly Free and GitHub Copilot Free. Free plans cap usage and often limit the best models, so use them to test fit. If an app becomes part of daily work, compare the paid plan against the hours it saves. Be careful with free apps that ask for broad access to email or files, and check what the vendor does with your data.

Are there good AI apps for iPhone and Android?

Most of the assistants and writing tools in this guide offer phone apps, but availability differs by device and region, so check the store listing. Voice input and photo input are the features that make a phone app more useful than the web version. Avoid unknown apps with generic names that wrap a public model and charge a weekly fee.

How do you choose an AI app for your team?

  1. Start from the task. Write down the one job you repeat most, such as summarizing calls or drafting replies.
  2. Check the data terms. Find out whether your inputs are used to train models and whether business plans change that.
  3. Test with real work. Run the same five tasks in two apps and compare the output.
  4. Count the cost per user. Seat prices add up: at $20 a seat, a team of ten spends $200 a month, which is our arithmetic.
  5. Look at integrations. An app that connects to your email, CRM or storage saves more time than a smarter one that does not.
  6. Set rules. Decide which data staff may paste into an AI app.

When off-the-shelf apps cannot reach your systems or your rules, a custom app or agent can. Our AI agent builders guide covers the no-code route, and our AI development services, AI integration services and AI automation cover custom work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which are the best AI apps?

Pick by job. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot for general work, Perplexity for cited research, Grammarly and Notion AI for writing, Adobe Firefly for images, GitHub Copilot for code, and Zapier or Make for automation.

What are the best free AI apps?

Claude, Notion, Grammarly and GitHub Copilot all have free plans. Grammarly’s free plan includes 100 AI prompts, and GitHub Copilot’s free tier includes 2,000 completions. Free plans cap usage, so use them to test fit.

What is the number one AI app?

There is no single number one. The best app depends on the job, and ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot are the general assistants most people compare first.

Is ChatGPT still the best AI?

ChatGPT remains a strong general assistant, but others lead in specific areas: Claude for long documents and careful writing, Perplexity for cited research, and Microsoft Copilot for work inside Microsoft 365. Test two on your own tasks.

Which AI tool is better than ChatGPT?

Better depends on the job. Claude, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot are the closest general alternatives, and specialist apps like Perplexity or Grammarly can beat a general assistant at their one task.

What are the best AI apps for iPhone?

Most major assistants and writing tools have iPhone apps. Check the App Store listing for your region, and prefer apps from the model makers over unknown wrappers that charge weekly fees.

Do I really need AI on my phone?

Not necessarily. A phone app helps when you use voice or photo input, or need quick answers away from a desk. If you only work at a computer, the web version is enough.

Who are the major AI platforms?

OpenAI (ChatGPT), Anthropic (Claude), Google (Gemini), Microsoft (Copilot) and Meta are the large providers whose assistants most apps build on or compete with.

How much do AI apps cost?

Many have free tiers. Listed prices include Claude Pro at $20 a month, Notion Business at $20 per member, Microsoft 365 Copilot at $21 per user per month, and Adobe Firefly plans from $9.99. Prices change, so confirm on the vendor page.

Bottom Line

The best AI apps are the ones that fit a job you repeat. Choose a general assistant, add one specialist tool for writing, research, images, code or automation, and keep a free tier until the work proves the upgrade.
