How much does it cost to develop an AI agent?

Published estimates range from about $5,000 for a basic agent on a no-code platform to $100,000 or more for a custom enterprise system, and they disagree because they price different things. Six cost lines decide the total: discovery, development, integration, model usage, infrastructure, and maintenance. Model usage is often the smallest of them at modest volume.

  • Three agency cost guides publish very different ranges: Yellow Systems $5,000 to $15,000 for a basic agent and $70,000 to $150,000+ for enterprise, Pepper Effect $5,000 to $500,000+ across four approaches, and WildNet Edge $20,000 to $500,000+. These are marketing pages, not audits.
  • Build cost is mostly people. One guide splits it 15% discovery and design, 40% development and prompt engineering, 25% integration, and 20% testing and deployment.
  • Model usage can be small. At 10,000 conversations a month, our arithmetic from Anthropic’s listed prices gives about $5.50 on Claude Haiku 5.5, $110 on Sonnet 5.5, and $220 on Opus 5.5.
  • Maintenance is the line people forget. WildNet Edge advises budgeting 15% to 20% of the initial cost each year.
  • Buying instead of building is an option. Intercom Fin charges $0.99 per resolved outcome, Zapier starts at $19.99 for 750 tasks, and Make at $9 for 5,000 credits.
  • Ask every vendor to price discovery, integration, usage, hosting, and maintenance as separate lines. CommercePundit scopes agents that way. See the last section.

What does it cost to build an AI agent?

There is no single price because “AI agent” covers a FAQ bot and a system that runs a supply chain. Here are the ranges three agencies publish for the same question. They are what the vendors say they charge, collected from their own pages in October 2026. We have not audited them, and none is a CommercePundit quote.

Source Simple agent Mid-level Complex or enterprise
Yellow Systems $5,000 to $15,000 (basic) $20,000 to $50,000 $70,000 to $150,000+
Pepper Effect $5,000 to $20,000 (no-code platform) $20,000 to $50,000 (low-code framework) $60,000 to $200,000+ (custom); $200,000 to $500,000+ (enterprise platform)
WildNet Edge $20,000 to $40,000 (basic task agents) $40,000 to $100,000 (agentic workflow systems) $100,000 to $500,000+ (enterprise autonomous systems)

The ranges overlap at the low end and diverge at the top. The spread comes from the same few drivers, which all three pages name: how autonomous the agent is, how deep the integrations go, how ready your data is, and how strict the security and compliance needs are. WildNet Edge says data cleaning, indexing, and validation can take up to 40% of the budget.

Which parts of an AI agent build cost money?

Treat the budget as six lines. If a quote shows one number, ask for the split.

Cost line What it covers What drives it
Discovery and design Choosing the job, defining success, mapping the workflow How unclear the process is today
Development Prompts, tools, logic, memory, and the agent loop Autonomy level and number of actions
Integration Connecting to your CRM, ERP, store, help desk, and data Number of systems and API quality
Model usage Tokens billed by the model provider Volume, model size, prompt length
Infrastructure Hosting, vector database, queues, logging Data volume and uptime needs
Evaluation and guardrails Test sets, approvals, monitoring, security review Risk of a wrong action
Maintenance Model upgrades, drift, new tools, fixes Rate of change in your systems

Yellow Systems suggests splitting a build budget 15% to discovery and design, 40% to development and prompt engineering, 25% to integration, and 20% to testing and deployment. Use it as a sanity check on a proposal, not a rule.

How much does AI model usage cost?

Models are billed per million tokens (MTok), with separate prices for input and output. Anthropic’s published prices include Claude Haiku 5.5 at $0.10 input and $0.50 output for prompts up to 100,000 tokens, Claude Sonnet 5.5 at $2 and $10, and Claude Opus 5.5 at $4 and $20 (Anthropic pricing, checked October 2026). Cache hits are priced far below normal input, and the Batch API gives a 50% discount on both input and output for work that can wait.

Here is a worked example. Assume a support agent that handles 10,000 conversations a month, with 3,000 input tokens and 500 output tokens each. That is 30 million input tokens and 5 million output tokens a month. This is our arithmetic from the prices above and ignores caching, retries, and tool calls.

Model Input cost Output cost Monthly total
Claude Haiku 5.5 30 x $0.10 = $3.00 5 x $0.50 = $2.50 $5.50
Claude Sonnet 5.5 30 x $2 = $60 5 x $10 = $50 $110
Claude Opus 5.5 30 x $4 = $120 5 x $20 = $100 $220

Real agents make several model calls per task, so Pepper Effect recommends calculating raw API cost from token volume and then applying a 1.7 to 2.0x buffer for retries, evaluations, and overhead. On Sonnet 5.5 that turns $110 into roughly $187 to $220. Compare that with the $100 to $5,000+ a month Yellow Systems lists for API fees and the $500 to $5,000 WildNet Edge lists for tokens: usage is real, but at moderate volume it is far smaller than the build and maintenance lines.

What does it cost to run and maintain an AI agent?

Running cost Published range Source
Model usage $100 to $5,000+ a month Yellow Systems
Model usage (tokens) $500 to $5,000 a month WildNet Edge
Infrastructure and memory $100 to $1,000+ a month (Yellow Systems); $200 to $2,000 a month (WildNet Edge) Both
Maintenance $500 to $2,500+ a month (Yellow Systems); 15% to 20% of the initial cost a year (WildNet Edge) Both
Production mid-to-enterprise deployment $5,000 to $15,000+ a month all-in Pepper Effect

Pepper Effect gives an example worth remembering: a $40,000 build can cost as much again to run and maintain over its first two years. Plan for that before you approve the first number.

What do AI chatbots, voice agents, and other builds cost?

AI chatbot development cost follows the same six lines, scaled by how much the bot does. Pepper Effect splits builds into four tiers: a smart FAQ agent using retrieval at $8,000 to $25,000 to build and a few hundred to a few thousand dollars a month to run, a task-executing agent that updates a CRM at $25,000 to $80,000 and $1,500 to $5,000 a month, a multi-agent system at $80,000 to $200,000 and $4,000 to $12,000 a month, and an enterprise platform at $200,000 to $500,000+ and $10,000 to $50,000+ a month.

An AI voice agent adds speech-to-text, text-to-speech, and telephone usage on top of the model, which makes AI voice agent cost depend on call minutes. We could not verify a reliable price for voice agents from a primary source, so ask a vendor to quote per minute and per month. The same goes for AI implementation cost inside tools you already own: the work is mostly configuration and integration, so price the integration line first.

How do you choose an AI agent development company?

Ask an AI agent development company to show a production agent it built, not a demo, and to explain how it tested that agent. Ask who owns the code, prompts, and evaluation data. Ask for the six cost lines separately, and for a discovery phase priced on its own so you can stop after it. Our guide to hiring AI developers covers the roles you may need if you build in-house instead.

Should you build an AI agent or buy one?

If a ready product does the job, buying is cheaper and faster. Intercom Fin charges $0.99 per resolved outcome, so you pay when the issue is solved. Zapier lists a Professional plan from $19.99 for 750 tasks, and Make lists a $9 plan with 5,000 credits. Those are prices as listed in October 2026 and they change often. Build when your data, workflow, or approval rules are unusual, or when the agent must act across several of your own systems. Our guides to AI agent builders and AI workflow automation tools compare the products, and how to build an AI agent for your business walks through the build.

Option Typical use Cost shape
No-code agent platform Simple, single-channel agents Platform subscription plus usage
Ready product priced per outcome Customer support Pay per resolved issue
Low-code framework Custom logic with some integration Build fee plus usage
Custom agent Deep integration, approvals, audit logs Build, usage, infrastructure, maintenance

How can you lower the cost of an AI agent?

  1. Start with one narrow job. A single workflow with a measurable result costs less to build and is easier to prove.
  2. Keep a person in the loop for risky actions. Yellow Systems lists human-in-the-loop agents at $5,000 to $20,000 and fully autonomous ones at $30,000 to $100,000+.
  3. Fix your data first. Cleaning and indexing is where budgets overrun.
  4. Route simple steps to a cheaper model. Use a small model for classification and a larger one only for hard steps.
  5. Use caching and batching where the work allows. Anthropic lists a 50% Batch API discount, and cache hits cost a fraction of normal input.
  6. Set a usage ceiling and alerts before launch so a loop cannot run up a bill.

What should you ask a vendor before accepting an AI agent quote?

  • Which of the six cost lines does this price include, and which are extra?
  • What is the monthly model usage estimate, and on which model?
  • What is the ongoing maintenance fee, and what does it cover?
  • Which systems does it integrate with, and who maintains those connections?
  • How will we know it works: what test set and what success measure?
  • Who owns the code, prompts, and evaluation data when we finish?

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to build an AI agent?

Published agency estimates range from about $5,000 for a basic agent on a no-code platform to $100,000 or more for a custom enterprise system. The total depends on autonomy, integrations, data readiness, and security needs.

How much does AI agent development cost for a small business?

Three agency guides put a basic agent between $5,000 and $40,000, depending on whether it is a no-code build or custom. A ready product priced per outcome, such as Intercom Fin at $0.99, can be cheaper if it fits.

How much does an AI agent cost to run each month?

Agency guides list model usage from $100 to $5,000+ a month, infrastructure from $100 to $2,000 a month, and maintenance from $500 to $2,500+ a month. Our worked example shows 10,000 conversations costing about $110 a month in model fees on Claude Sonnet 5.5.

What is the biggest cost in AI agent development?

Engineering and integration work is usually the largest line for a custom build. Yellow Systems puts development and prompt engineering at 40% of the budget and integration at 25%.

Why do AI agent cost estimates vary so much?

Because they price different things: simple task agents versus multi-system autonomous agents, no-code platforms versus custom engineering. The drivers are autonomy, integration depth, data readiness, and compliance.

How much does it cost to maintain an AI agent?

WildNet Edge advises budgeting 15% to 20% of the initial cost each year. Yellow Systems lists maintenance at $500 to $2,500+ a month.

Is it cheaper to buy or build an AI agent?

Buying is cheaper when a product fits your job. Building makes sense when your data, workflow, or approval rules are unusual or the agent must act across several of your own systems.

How can I reduce AI agent costs?

Start with one narrow job, keep a person approving risky actions, clean your data first, route simple steps to a cheaper model, and use caching and batching. Set a usage cap before launch.

How long does it take to build an AI agent?

Pepper Effect says a simple agent takes a few weeks of one developer’s time, and a multi-agent system takes several months across a team. WildNet Edge cites a startup support agent at 6 to 8 weeks.

Bottom Line

AI agent development cost depends less on the word “agent” and more on six lines: discovery, development, integration, model usage, infrastructure, and maintenance. Published ranges run from about $5,000 to $500,000+, and the honest answer for your project comes from pricing those lines separately for one narrow job. Plan for maintenance from the start and set a usage cap before launch. To get a scoped estimate, talk to us about agentic AI development services.
