How do you set up shipping and sales tax on Shopify?

Go to Settings, then Shipping and delivery, add a zone and a rate (flat, order amount, weight, carrier-calculated or free), and give every product an accurate weight. For tax, register with your state first, then use Shopify Tax or set rates by hand. Shopify calculates tax but does not file it unless you add automated filing.

The short version

  • Shipping is zones plus rates. A zone is a group of countries or regions, and each zone holds the rates customers see at checkout.
  • Five rate types cover most stores. Flat, order amount, weight, carrier-calculated and free. Weight-based and calculated rates break if product weights are wrong.
  • A gap in your tiers stops a sale. If an order falls outside every tier, checkout shows a shipping error. Leave the maximum empty on the top tier.
  • Live carrier rates cost more. Carrier-calculated shipping is included on Advanced and Plus, and Grow stores add it for a monthly fee or by switching to annual billing.
  • Tax is your responsibility. Shopify calculates it, but you must register to collect it and you must file and remit it, unless you use Shopify Tax with automated filing.
  • Shopify Tax is free to start. It is free until a US store reaches $100,000 in sales, then it charges a small percentage of transactions.

The 8 steps to set up Shopify shipping rates and sales tax

Learning how to set up shipping on Shopify comes down to two settings screens that decide whether a customer can finish checkout and whether you stay compliant. Do them in this order, because the later steps depend on the earlier ones.

Step 1. Add accurate weights to every product

Weight-based rates and carrier-calculated rates both depend on product weights. Shopify says that weight rates need accurate product weights or the rates will not calculate correctly. A product with no weight is the most common reason a weight-based rate fails, so set the weight, and the dimensions if you use live carrier rates, before you build any rates.

Step 2. Understand Shopify shipping profiles and zones

A shipping zone is a group of countries or regions, such as North America or Europe, and you create rates within each zone. In other words, Shopify shipping zones are where your rates live. A shipping profile holds zones and rates, and lets you set different rules for specific products and locations. A country or region can belong to only one zone within a profile, so remove it from one zone before you add it to another.

One condition catches new stores. To sell to a country, it must be in an active market. Customers in an inactive market cannot order, even if their country sits in a zone with rates.

Step 3. Choose a Shopify shipping rate type for each zone

Pick the simplest model your business can run. The table below compares the options, and the next section explains when each fits.

Step 4. Open your Shopify shipping settings and add the option

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings, then Shipping and delivery.
  2. Under Shipping profiles, select the profile to edit.
  3. Optionally, under Shipping zones, select Add zone, name it and choose its regions.
  4. For the zone, select Add shipping option, name it (customers see this at checkout) and choose a rate type.
  5. Select Done, then Save.

Shopify is gradually moving shipping profiles and rates to shipping options by market. Existing stores keep their current setup until upgraded, and rates migrate automatically, so your screens may look slightly different from these steps.

Step 5. Decide your Shopify free shipping rule

Free shipping can be added to any rate type. For tiered rates, it applies only to orders within that tier. Set the threshold above your average order value rather than below it, because free shipping at a level your typical customer already clears is a discount, not an incentive. Our guide to setting up a Shopify store shows where shipping sits among the other launch steps.

Step 6. Add carrier-calculated rates if you need live prices

Shopify calculated shipping, meaning live rates from UPS, FedEx or USPS, only makes sense when your costs vary a lot by weight and destination. They come with plan requirements, covered in the carrier section below.

Step 7. Set up Shopify sales tax

Register your business with the tax authority where you must collect, then open your Shopify tax settings and choose how you will calculate tax in Shopify. In the United States you can use Shopify Tax or set rates yourself with manual tax. Shopify uses default sales tax rates that it updates regularly, and says you should confirm they are correct for your situation. The tax sections below explain nexus, costs and what Shopify does not do.

Step 8. Test checkout from several addresses

Place test orders to addresses in each zone: a home-state address, an out-of-state address and an address in a zone you meant to exclude. Check that the right rates appear, that tax is added where you collect it, and that nothing shows a shipping error. Our guide to publishing a Shopify store covers the rest of the pre-launch checks.

Which shipping rate type to use

Rate type How it works Best for Watch for
Flat A fixed price, applied once per order by default A first store with similar-sized products Charging per product needs separate rates or a third-party app
Order amount Price tiers based on order value, each with a minimum and maximum Stores that want cheaper shipping on bigger baskets Tiers must cover the full range of order values
Weight Price tiers based on the combined weight of the items Products that vary a lot in weight Needs accurate weights on every product
Carrier or app calculated A carrier such as UPS, FedEx or USPS sets the price from weight, dimensions and destination Stores whose costs swing by destination Plan requirements, and it fails if weights or dimensions are missing
Free Can be added to any rate type Promotions and order thresholds On tiered rates it applies only within its tier

Rate types and limits from Shopify’s help pages on shipping zones and rates, checked October 9, 2026.

Flat rate is the right default for a new store because it is predictable and does not depend on perfect weights. Move to weight or calculated rates only when a flat price starts losing you money on heavy orders. One tier rule is easy to miss: tiers should cover the full range of order values or weights. If an order falls outside every tier, checkout shows a shipping error, so leave the maximum empty on the top tier.

Carrier-calculated rates and shipping labels

Carrier-calculated shipping asks UPS, FedEx, USPS or another carrier for a live price at checkout, based on the order’s weight, dimensions and destination. Shopify’s help center sets these rules:

  • Plans. Third-party carrier-calculated shipping is available on Advanced and Plus. Grow stores can add it for an additional monthly fee or by switching to annual billing. Shopify’s page gives no dollar amount for that fee, so check the current price in your admin.
  • Carriers. You connect your own account with a supported carrier: UPS, FedEx, USPS, Canada Post or Australia Post.
  • Packing. If products have a packed product size, Shopify packs each shipment into the smallest saved box that fits. Otherwise it uses your store’s default package.
  • Backup rates. Backup rates appear only when calculated rates fail and no other eligible rate is available. Add a flat rate as a safety net for the same destinations.

Shopify shipping labels come from Shopify Shipping, a separate feature that lets you buy, print and manage discounted labels from supported carriers in your admin. Shopify says label discounts vary by plan but does not publish percentages on that page, so compare the price in your admin against your current carrier. If you ship from the US you can also add shipping insurance, submit claims for lost or damaged shipments and create return labels.

Shopify sales tax: what Shopify does and what you do

Task Who handles it
Default tax rates Shopify uses default rates and updates them regularly. You confirm they are right and can override them.
Deciding where you owe tax You, with a tax professional. Shopify says it is your responsibility to consult local tax authorities or a tax professional.
Registering with the tax authority You. Shopify says that if you need to collect sales tax, you must register your business with your local or federal tax authority.
Filing and remitting You, unless you use Shopify Tax with automated filing. Shopify does not file or remit your taxes otherwise.

Responsibilities from Shopify’s tax help pages, checked October 9, 2026.

The takeaway is that Shopify’s tax tools calculate and display tax. They do not decide whether you owe it. The software does nothing if you configure nothing, and an unregistered obligation accrues quietly until a state notice arrives.

Nexus: when you have to collect tax

Nexus is the connection between your business and a state that requires you to collect its sales tax. Two things create it. Physical presence does, such as an office, a warehouse or inventory in the state. Economic activity does too, after the sales or transaction thresholds states set since the Supreme Court’s Wayfair decision.

The thresholds differ by state. South Dakota’s rule of $100,000 in sales or 200 transactions is the model many states copied, but states vary on the amount and on whether they count transactions at all. Texas and California, for example, use a $500,000 sales threshold. Some states have dropped the transaction test, and states also differ on what counts as sales. Treat these as examples from secondary sources, and check each state’s revenue department before you rely on a number.

For a store selling in one state, this step is simple. Once you ship to many states at volume, the question belongs to an accountant. Our guide to setting up a Shopify store flags nexus as the point where settings turn into a compliance question.

What Shopify Tax costs

Item Shopify Tax in the US
Free allowance Free until the store reaches $100,000 in sales
How sales are counted Stores created on or after May 13, 2026 count lifetime sales. Stores created before that date count annual sales per calendar year.
Basic, Grow or Advanced 0.35% of transactions with calculated tax
Plus 0.25% of transactions with calculated tax
Maximum per order $0.99
Where fees apply Only in regions where you have activated tax collection, and only for stores under $25,000,000 in annual sales

Pricing from Shopify Tax pricing, checked October 9, 2026. Fees are billed to the merchant, not charged to customers. Confirm current terms before you rely on them.

On a $40 order, 0.35% is 14 cents, and the cap of $0.99 applies only to larger orders. For most small stores, the cost is low next to the risk of getting tax wrong by hand. The fee is also separate from what you pay in actual sales tax, which you collect from customers and remit to the state.

Why a shipping rate does not show at checkout

Symptom Likely cause Fix
No rates for one country The country is not in an active market or not in a zone Activate the market and add the country to a zone
A shipping error on some orders The order falls outside every price or weight tier Cover the full range and leave the top tier’s maximum empty
Weight-based rate is wrong or missing A product has no weight or the wrong weight Add accurate weights to every product
Live carrier rates disappear The carrier request failed, or your plan does not include carrier-calculated shipping Add backup rates and check your plan
A country is in two zones A country can sit in only one zone per profile Remove it from one zone before adding it to another

Causes and fixes from Shopify’s help center, checked October 9, 2026.

Customers see only the rates that apply to their address and order, and the cheapest is selected by default, so a mistake in one zone usually shows up as a missing option rather than a wrong price. If your setup goes beyond what zones and tiers can express, such as rules by product type, warehouse or customer group, that is development work. Our Shopify development services team can scope it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Shopify calculate shipping?

It depends on the rate type you set. Flat rates charge a fixed price, order-amount and weight rates use the tiers you define, and carrier-calculated rates ask the carrier for a price based on weight, dimensions and destination. Customers see only the rates that apply to their address, with the cheapest selected by default.

How do I add free shipping on Shopify?

Add a shipping option in Settings, then Shipping and delivery, and set its price to free. Shopify says free shipping can be added to any rate type, and on tiered rates it applies only to orders within that tier. Set your threshold above your average order value so it works as an incentive.

What are Shopify shipping profiles?

A shipping profile holds shipping zones and rates, and lets you set different shipping rules for specific products and locations. For example, one profile can cover heavy items shipped from one location and another can cover everything else.

Is it cheaper to ship through Shopify?

Shopify Shipping lets you buy discounted labels from supported carriers in your admin. Shopify says the discounts vary by plan but does not publish percentages on its help page, so compare the label price in your admin with what you pay your carrier today.

Does Shopify charge taxes?

Shopify calculates sales tax at checkout using default rates it updates regularly, but you are responsible for registering, filing and remitting it. Shopify does not file or remit your taxes unless you use Shopify Tax with automated filing. Shopify Tax itself has a fee once your US sales pass $100,000.

Do I need to collect sales tax in every state?

No. You collect it where you have nexus and are registered, which comes from physical presence or from passing a state’s economic threshold. Thresholds differ by state, so check each state’s revenue department, or ask an accountant once your shipping spreads across several states.

How much does Shopify Tax cost?

Shopify Tax is free until a US store reaches $100,000 in sales. After that it charges 0.35% of transactions with calculated tax on Basic, Grow and Advanced, or 0.25% on Plus, capped at $0.99 per order. Fees apply only in regions where you have activated tax collection.

Does Shopify file sales tax for me?

Not by default. Shopify says it does not file or remit your taxes unless you use Shopify Tax with automated filing. Without it, you file and remit with each state yourself or through a tax service.

Why is my shipping rate not showing at checkout?

The usual causes are a country that is not in an active market or a zone, an order that falls outside every price or weight tier, missing product weights on a weight-based rate, or a failed carrier request. Add backup rates and cover the full range of your tiers.

How do I not charge sales tax on Shopify?

Collect tax only in the regions where you are required to and registered. A Shopify tax exempt buyer, such as a reseller, usually needs to provide an exemption certificate, and the rules are set by each state. Check Shopify’s tax help and your state’s rules before you remove tax from an order.

Bottom Line

To set up Shopify shipping rates, add accurate product weights, build zones and rates in Settings, then Shipping and delivery, and choose the simplest rate type your business can run. Cover every tier, add backup rates if you use live carrier prices, and test checkout from several addresses.

For sales tax, register where you must collect, let Shopify Tax or manual rates calculate it, and remember that filing and remitting stay with you unless you add automated filing. When your shipping rules or tax setup outgrow the standard screens, our Shopify development services team can review the setup before you commit to a build.
