Quick answer

What are AI rank tracking tools?

AI rank tracking tools measure whether an AI assistant names, cites, or recommends your brand when someone asks it a question. Instead of a position in a list of blue links, they report four things: how often you are mentioned, how often you are cited as a source, how often you are the primary recommendation, and the sentiment of what the model says about you.

Every AI rank tracker on the market is about eighteen months old, the prices change without notice, and the roundups ranking for this topic are mostly written by the vendors themselves. That combination produces a lot of confident advice built on numbers nobody re-checked.

So we did something narrow and useful instead of another opinion piece: on September 16, 2026 we opened the pricing page of every tool below and wrote down what it actually said. Three of the published comparisons we read were quoting prices the vendor no longer lists, and two credited a platform with tracking Microsoft Copilot when its own documentation does not.

Commerce Pundit does not sell a rank tracker and takes no affiliate commission on any tool here. We use several of them on client work, which is the only reason we care whether the price tags are real.

TL;DR

  • Cheapest real entry point: Rankscale Essentials at $20/mo and Otterly.AI Lite at $29/mo. Otterly’s $29 tier is the least expensive plan we found that includes Microsoft Copilot.
  • Copilot is the coverage gap. Rankscale, Otterly.AI, Ahrefs Brand Radar and Profound list it. Nightwatch and SE Ranking do not — despite two competing roundups saying SE Ranking does.
  • Profound publishes no price at all. Its page shows “Trial — Free” and “Enterprise — Custom”. The “$99/month starter” figure circulating in other comparisons is not on the live page.
  • Free gets you a snapshot, not a trend. HubSpot’s AI Search Grader and Ahrefs’ checker are genuinely free and genuinely one-time. Nothing free tracks a prompt set over months.
  • Google Search Console now has its own generative AI report — free, and the only source of real impression data. It cannot separate AI Overviews from AI Mode and covers no non-Google engine.
  • Budget by prompts × engines × locales × cadence, not by sticker price. A $29 plan with 15 prompts is more expensive per prompt than a $189 plan with 100.
  • Measurement is not the fix. Every tool here tells you that you are invisible in an answer. None of them make you visible — that is content, entity clarity, and schema work.

What AI rank tracking tools actually measure

A classic rank tracker asks a simple question with a simple answer: for this keyword, what position is this URL? An AI rank tracker cannot ask that, because a generated answer has no positions. It has a paragraph that either mentions you or does not.

Vendors market these products under several names — AI rank tracking software, AI search rank tracking tools, answer-engine visibility platforms, or simply an LLM rank tracker. They describe the same job, and the best LLM rank tracker for you will not be the one with the most metrics — it will be the one covering the engines your buyers use. The category converged on four measurements, and anything worth paying for reports all four:

  • Mention rate — the share of your tracked prompts where the model names your brand at all. This is the floor. If it is zero, nothing else matters.
  • Citation rate — the share of prompts where your domain is linked or footnoted as a source. Mention and citation are different outcomes: an assistant can recommend you while citing a directory that lists you.
  • Primary recommendation rate — the share of prompts where you are the first or strongest suggestion rather than one name in a list of eight. This is the metric that correlates with anything commercial.
  • Sentiment — whether the description of you is positive, neutral, or negative. Useful only when the tool stores the full response text alongside the label. A sentiment score with no quote attached is not something you can act on.

Two mechanical differences from classic rank tracking are worth internalizing before you buy anything, because they determine what your data will be worth.

The same prompt returns different answers. Models are non-deterministic and their retrieval layers refresh constantly. A single check is a coin flip; a trend across a stable prompt set run on a fixed cadence is a measurement. This is why every serious tool prices in prompts and runs rather than keywords.

There is no keyword volume. Nobody publishes how many people asked ChatGPT a given question. You are choosing prompts from your own judgment about how customers phrase problems, which makes your prompt library the single highest-leverage thing you build — and the thing no tool builds for you.

One vocabulary note, because it causes real confusion when you are comparing products. Traditional AI website rank tracking — checking where your pages sit for a keyword — is a different measurement from answer-engine visibility, and some vendors sell both under one label. If a product describes itself as AI site rank tracking software, read carefully whether it is polling generated answers or simply applying machine learning to ordinary position data. The second thing is useful; it is not what this article is about.

Best AI rank tracking tools compared: price and engine coverage

Ranking the best AI rank tracking software in a fixed order would be dishonest — the right tool changes entirely with which engines you need and what you already pay for. So this table compares the facts that do not depend on your situation. Every figure came from the vendor’s own pricing or product page on September 16, 2026. Where a vendor does not publish a number, the cell says so rather than repeating a figure from someone else’s blog post. Treat all of it as perishable — AI search rank tracking software re-prices constantly, and several of these vendors have changed tiers twice this year.

Tool Entry price Top published tier Engines listed Copilot Free access
Rankscale $20/mo (Essentials) $780/mo, 12,000 credits 10 Yes 7-day Pro trial
Otterly.AI $29/mo, 15 prompts $489/mo, 400 prompts 4 + paid add-ons Yes, all plans Trial + free GEO tools
Ahrefs Brand Radar €47/mo custom prompts €179/mo visibility index 7 Yes Free visibility checker
Nightwatch €79/mo, 500 keywords €399/mo, 7,500 keywords 6 Not listed 14-day trial, no card
SE Ranking / SE Visible AI Search add-on Not published standalone 5, Claude announced Not listed 5 checks/day free
Profound Not published Enterprise, custom quote 9 on Enterprise Yes, Enterprise 10 prompts, once, ChatGPT
Semrush AI Visibility $117.33/mo SEO plan $455.67/mo Advanced 4 named, “and more” Not confirmed Trial
Peec AI Not published Not published 3 named, “and more” Not confirmed Not stated
HubSpot AI Search Grader Free 3 No Entirely free
Google Search Console Free Google surfaces only No Entirely free

Prices as published by each vendor on September 16, 2026. Euro and dollar figures appear as the vendor lists them — several of these companies bill in euros. “Not listed” means the engine does not appear in the vendor’s own documentation, which is not the same as the tool being unable to check it.

Which AI rank tracker covers which engine

Coverage is the first filter, and it is the one most comparison tables blur. If a platform cannot poll the engine your buyers actually use, its accuracy and dashboards are irrelevant. Here is what each vendor lists, engine by engine.

Engine Rankscale Otterly Brand Radar Nightwatch SE Ranking Profound
ChatGPT Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes
Perplexity Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes
Google AI Overviews Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes
Google AI Mode Yes Add-on Yes Yes Yes Yes
Gemini Yes Add-on Yes Yes Yes Yes
Microsoft Copilot Yes Yes Yes No No Yes
Claude Yes Add-on Yes Yes Announced Yes
Grok Yes No No No No Yes
DeepSeek Yes No No No No Yes
Mistral Yes No No No No No

Two patterns fall out of that grid. Everyone covers ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s two answer surfaces — that is table stakes, and no tool wins on it. The differences are all at the edges: Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral. If your buyers are enterprise IT teams inside Microsoft 365, the edge is where your whole decision lives.

Microsoft Copilot rank tracking: the coverage nobody talks about

Copilot is the most underserved engine in this category, and it is underserved for a boring reason — it has no consumer mindshare among marketers. It does have distribution. Copilot ships inside Windows, Edge, Bing, and Microsoft 365, which means it reaches office workers who never chose an AI assistant at all. For a B2B vendor selling to enterprise IT, that is a more qualified audience than most of Perplexity.

Of the platforms we checked, four list Microsoft Copilot: Rankscale, Otterly.AI, Ahrefs Brand Radar, and Profound on its Enterprise tier. Otterly.AI is the cheapest route in — Copilot sits in the base engine set on every plan, including the $29/mo Lite tier, so Copilot rank tracking costs you $29 and 15 prompts to start.

That is the whole market for Copilot rank tracking software at the moment: four vendors, one of them enterprise-quote-only. Anyone selling you a Copilot-specific product is almost certainly reselling one of these engines, and there is no standalone tool worth the integration cost when a $29 plan covers Copilot alongside three other engines.

Worth correcting: two of the comparison articles currently ranking for Copilot rank tracking credit SE Ranking with Copilot coverage. SE Ranking’s own tracker page and knowledge base list five engines — Google AI Mode, AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity and ChatGPT — with Claude described as coming. Copilot is not among them. The confusion is understandable, because SE Ranking does report classic Bing rankings and Copilot draws on the Bing index, but a Bing position is not a Copilot answer. If Copilot is why you are buying, verify it in a trial before you commit.

One genuine shortcut exists. Because Copilot leans on Bing’s index, classic Bing rank tracking is a cheap leading indicator — not a substitute, but a signal you can get from tools you may already own. If you are nowhere in Bing’s index, you will not be cited by Copilot, and you can learn that without buying anything new.

Perplexity rank tracking tools

Perplexity is the easiest engine to track and the most instructive one to watch, because it shows its sources in the answer. Every claim carries a numbered citation, which means the gap between “mentioned” and “cited” is visible rather than inferred. If you are building a measurement program from nothing, start here — you will learn more per dollar than on any other engine.

Every platform in the grid covers it, so the decision is not coverage but depth. The useful question is whether the tool stores the cited URL list per prompt. That list is the actual work queue: it tells you which competitor pages, directories, and review sites Perplexity trusts on your topic, which is the shortlist of places you need to be mentioned. A tool that gives you a Perplexity visibility percentage and no source list has told you the score and hidden the game.

For cheap Perplexity rank tracking specifically, Otterly.AI at $29/mo and Rankscale at $20/mo are the two lowest published entry points, and both include Perplexity in the base plan. Note that you do not need a dedicated Perplexity rank tracker tool — single-engine products exist, but every multi-engine platform here covers Perplexity, and paying separately for one engine rarely makes sense.

ChatGPT rank tracking tools

ChatGPT has the largest user base and the least transparent behavior. It sometimes answers from model knowledge with no retrieval at all, sometimes browses and cites, and the mix varies by how the question is phrased. Practically, this means two things for your prompt library.

First, ChatGPT rank tracking needs different prompt phrasing than Google AI Overviews. AI Overviews fire on search-shaped queries — short, keyword-like. ChatGPT responds to conversational, constraint-loaded questions: “which ERP integration partner is best for a mid-market distributor already on NetSuite.” Running your Google keyword list through ChatGPT produces answers nobody would ever have asked for.

Second, brand mentions with no citation are common and still valuable. If ChatGPT recommends you from model knowledge, there is no link to attribute, no referral in analytics, and no trace except a tracker that recorded the mention. This is precisely the traffic that has been quietly disappearing from reports for two years.

Profound’s free trial is the cheapest way to sanity-check ChatGPT specifically — 10 prompts, run once, ChatGPT only. That is enough to learn whether you are invisible, and not remotely enough to track a trend.

If you are shortlisting the best ChatGPT rank tracker tool on coverage alone, the field is wide — every platform in the grid above handles it. Choose instead on whether the tool logs the full response text, because with ChatGPT the uncited mention is the thing you most need to see and the thing a bare score hides. ChatGPT rank tracker tools that only surface a visibility percentage will leave you unable to tell a recommendation from a passing reference.

AI Mode rank tracking tools and AI Overview rank tracking

These are two different surfaces with two different behaviors, and most tools bundle them under one label. AI Overviews sit above the classic results on an ordinary search. AI Mode is a separate conversational tab. Same underlying models, very different prompts and very different citation patterns.

Google’s own engines are the one place where you are not entirely dependent on a third-party tool — see the free section below. They are also where the most competitive AI rank tracking software effort is concentrated, since Google still carries the overwhelming majority of search volume. If you track only one pair of surfaces, track these.

Because every vendor covers both surfaces, the best AI Mode rank tracking tool for you is whichever one separates the two in its reporting. Ask that in the trial, because some of the best AI Mode rank tracking tools and the best AI Overviews rank tracking tools alike still merge AI Mode and AI Overview rank tracking into a single “Google AI” line, which reproduces exactly the limitation that makes Search Console insufficient on its own. AI Mode rank tracking tools that split the surfaces let you tell a conversational-query problem from a search-query problem.

DeepSeek rank tracking tools, Grok, Claude and Mistral

These four are where coverage collapses. Rankscale is the only tool we checked that lists all four; Profound covers Grok, DeepSeek and Claude on Enterprise. So the honest answer on DeepSeek rank tracking tools is that there are two, and one of them will not quote you a price. If a DeepSeek rank tracking tool is a hard requirement — most often for teams selling into markets where DeepSeek has real share — confirm it in a trial rather than trusting any comparison table, including this one. The same applies to DeepSeek search rank tracking tools and DeepSeek SEO rank tracking tools marketed as single-engine products: check what they actually poll before paying for one.

For most US B2B companies, honestly, these are noise. Track them when you have evidence your buyers use them, not because a dashboard has room for another logo.

Free AI rank tracker options and cheap rank tracking tools

“Free AI rank tracker” is one of the most searched phrasings in this category and the most misleading. Free tools in this space give you a snapshot. Paid tools give you a time series. The snapshot tells you whether you have a problem. Only the series tells you whether anything you did about it worked. So the best free AI rank tracker is the one that gets you to a decision fastest, not the one you keep.

Here is what is genuinely free, with no trial clock, as of September 16, 2026:

  • Google Search Console — free forever, and the only tool in this article reporting real impressions from real users rather than simulated prompts. Covers Google’s answer surfaces only. Details below.
  • HubSpot AI Search Grader — free, no account required. Checks ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, and returns a score out of 100 built from sentiment (40 points), presence quality (20), brand recognition (20), share of voice (10) and market competition (10). It is a one-time brand diagnostic, not a tracker, and it does not touch Copilot.
  • Ahrefs AI Visibility Checker — free preview of your AI visibility. More usefully, Ahrefs includes custom prompt tracking at no extra cost on its Lite and higher paid plans, which makes Brand Radar close to free if you already pay for Ahrefs.
  • SE Ranking’s free AI visibility checker — five checks per day. Enough to spot-check a handful of prompts, not enough to build a baseline.
  • Otterly.AI’s free GEO tools — AI keyword research and content analysis, separate from the paid tracker.

A word on the engine-specific searches, since they are common. There is no free Perplexity rank tracking product that will hold a trend for you — Perplexity is covered by the free HubSpot grader and the free Ahrefs and SE Ranking checkers as a one-time look, and after that it is a paid line item. The same is true for ChatGPT: the best free ChatGPT rank tracker is really Profound’s 10-prompt trial or HubSpot’s grader, and neither is a tracker. Treat “free” as a diagnostic tier.

Genuinely cheap rank tracking tools, by contrast, do exist, and they are the sensible next step once the free snapshot has convinced you there is something to fix:

Cheapest published plan Price What you get
Rankscale Essentials $20/mo Widest engine list at the lowest price; credit allowance not published at this tier
Otterly.AI Lite $29/mo 15 prompts across ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity, Copilot
Ahrefs custom prompts €47/mo Included free on Lite+ plans — effectively $0 if you already pay for Ahrefs
Nightwatch Starter €79/mo 500 keywords, classic plus AI tracking in one tool, unlimited seats

What Google Search Console gives you for nothing

This is the part missing from every comparison we read, and it is the only free option that reports what real users actually saw.

Google has shipped a Generative AI performance report in Search Console. Per Google’s own documentation, it covers impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode, excludes Search Labs experiments, and can be filtered by page, country, date and device. It is free, it is your own property data, and no simulated prompt set can match it.

Three limitations decide whether it is enough on its own:

  • It cannot separate AI Overviews from AI Mode. Google’s documentation gives no filter to split the two, so you see a combined generative-AI number and cannot attribute a change to either surface.
  • It is Google-only. No ChatGPT, no Perplexity, no Copilot, no Claude. If a third of your category’s research happens in ChatGPT, Search Console is structurally blind to it.
  • The usual limits apply — 1,000 rows, delayed and preliminary recent data, and nothing at all if your site does not clear the impression threshold.

The honest sequence for most teams: start in Search Console, because it is free and it is real. Buy a tool when you need the engines Google cannot show you, or when you need to prove a content change moved something.

Why the prices you read elsewhere are wrong

We did not set out to audit other people’s comparison articles. It became unavoidable once the numbers stopped matching.

Three examples from articles currently ranking for these terms:

  • Profound at “$99/month”. Two separate roundups list a Profound Starter plan at $99/mo, one adding a $399/mo Growth tier. Profound’s live pricing page shows two options: Trial, free, and Enterprise, custom. There is no published $99 plan to buy.
  • Nightwatch at “~$32/month”. Nightwatch’s published entry plan is €79/mo for 500 keywords — roughly two and a half times the quoted figure.
  • Rankscale as a $780 enterprise product. The $780/mo Enterprise tier for 12,000 credits is real and correctly reported. What goes unmentioned is that the same platform starts at $20/mo, which changes the shortlist for a small team completely.

None of this is necessarily dishonest. It is what happens when a category re-prices every quarter and nobody re-checks. The operational lesson is simple and applies to this article too: treat every price in every comparison, including ours, as a hypothesis to confirm on the vendor’s page before you build a budget on it.

Model the cost before you commit

Sticker price is the least useful number in this category, because the unit you consume is a prompt-run, not a seat. Four variables set your real bill:

prompts × engines × locales × runs per month = total checks

Work an example. Forty prompts, four engines, one country, weekly: 40 × 4 × 1 × 4 = 640 checks a month. Modest. Now add three more countries and move your top ten prompts to daily, and you are past 3,000 — a five-fold increase from two decisions that felt small.

This is why prompt-capped and credit-based plans behave so differently. Otterly’s $29 Lite tier caps you at 15 prompts; its $189 Standard tier gives 100. Per prompt, the expensive plan is cheaper. Coalition Technologies published a worked version of the same math for Rankscale’s top tier, estimating about 6,857 monthly runs from 12,000 credits at roughly 1.75 credits per four-engine prompt — a reasonable way to sanity-check any credit plan before signing.

Two cost traps worth naming. Locales multiply silently — the same 40 prompts across five markets is 200 prompts, and most plans count it that way. And daily cadence is rarely worth it below the top handful of prompts, because the run-to-run variance in generated answers is large enough that a daily chart mostly shows noise. Tier your cadence: daily for the prompts tied to revenue, weekly or monthly for everything else.

How to choose

Pick the row that describes you, not the tool with the most features.

If this is you Start with Why
You have no baseline and no budget Search Console + HubSpot grader Free, and enough to establish whether you have a problem at all
You already pay for Ahrefs Brand Radar custom prompts Included on Lite+ plans; no new vendor, no new invoice
Copilot is where your buyers are Otterly.AI Lite, $29/mo Cheapest plan that includes Copilot in the base engine set
You need the long tail of engines Rankscale Only tool checked that lists Grok, DeepSeek and Mistral alongside the majors
You want classic and AI ranks in one view Nightwatch or SE Ranking Mature rank tracking with AI layered on; neither lists Copilot
You need SSO, SOC 2 and procurement Profound Enterprise suite with the widest engine list — expect a quote, not a price page

All of these run entirely in the browser, so online rank tracking is the only delivery model in the category — there is no desktop software to install, and any product marketed as downloadable AI rank tracking software is a classic position tracker wearing a new label. Whatever you shortlist, run the trial against the same prompt set on each tool. Vendors disagree with each other on the same brand and the same question, and the only way to find out which one matches reality is to check a few answers by hand. If a tool will not show you the full response text behind a score, that is the finding.

Measurement is not the fix

The trap in this category is buying a dashboard and calling it a strategy. Every tool here is diagnostic. None of them changes what an AI assistant says about you — they only tell you what it currently says.

What moves the number is unglamorous and familiar: content that answers the question directly and early, entity clarity so models can tell who you are, structured data that removes ambiguity, and third-party mentions on the sources the engines already trust. We wrote up the mechanics of that separately in our guide to optimizing a website for AI Overviews and LLM answers, including the technical prerequisites most teams skip.

The loop that works: measure a baseline, ship a specific fix, wait for re-crawl and re-generation, measure again. Skipping the middle step is how teams end up with eighteen months of visibility charts and no idea what caused any of the movement. If you would rather have a team run that loop on your behalf, that is what our AI SEO services exist to do — the measurement program and the content and technical work that follows it.

Teams with unusual requirements sometimes skip commercial tools entirely and query the model APIs directly on a schedule, storing responses in their own warehouse. It is more work than it sounds and worth it only at real scale or under strict data-residency rules; it is the kind of build our LLM development services handle when a client needs measurement no vendor sells.

Do you still need a classic rank tracker?

Yes, and for a reason that has nothing to do with nostalgia. AI Overviews are assembled largely from pages that already rank. Your classic positions are a leading indicator of your AI visibility, and when both fall together you are looking at one problem, not two.

Run them side by side. A page that holds position three on Google and never appears in an AI Overview for the same query has a formatting and extractability problem, not an authority problem — and that is a fixable, specific diagnosis you cannot reach from AI data alone. The fundamentals of search engine optimization have not been replaced; they have become the input to a second system.

One note on scope, since these two articles sit next to each other: this page is about measuring AI answer-engine visibility. If the question you are actually asking is which platform should anchor your whole SEO stack — crawling, keyword research, backlinks, reporting — that decision belongs in our comparison of the best SEO tools for Google and AI search. And if you want to understand the engines themselves before deciding which to track, start with our breakdown of the best AI search engines.

Bottom line

The AI rank tracking market is young enough that the right move for most teams is deliberately unambitious. Establish a free baseline in Search Console, confirm the problem with a free grader, then buy the cheapest tool that covers the engines your buyers actually use. For many B2B companies that is $20 to $30 a month, not the enterprise contract the category’s marketing implies.

Two things to hold onto. Verify every price on the vendor’s own page — this article included, because our numbers carry a date and that date will age. And check Copilot explicitly if it matters to you, because it is the engine most often claimed and least often supported.

The teams getting real value here are not the ones with the best dashboard. They are the ones who picked thirty prompts that map to how their customers describe their problem, ran them on a boring fixed schedule, and used the source lists to decide what to write next.
