If you sell products online, your product feed now powers three very different ad engines. Google Shopping shows your products when people search. Meta Advantage+ shows them when people scroll. And ChatGPT feed ads show them when people ask an AI assistant what to buy.
So which one deserves your budget in 2026? The short answer: Google Shopping is still the volume leader, Meta Advantage+ is still the best demand creator, and ChatGPT feed ads are the newest channel with the least competition. Most stores should run all three from one well-built feed, with budgets weighted by how mature each channel is. This guide shows you exactly how.
The key numbers at a glance:
- $3 to $5: OpenAI’s recommended starting cost-per-click bid for ChatGPT ads.
- Up to 1 million SKUs: the catalog size ChatGPT supports per advertiser.
- About $25 per day: the minimum daily budget per ChatGPT campaign in the US. There is no account-level minimum.
- 35%: the share of US retail Meta ad spend that went to Advantage+ campaigns in Q2 2025.
What is the difference between ChatGPT feed ads, Google Shopping and Meta Advantage+?
All three turn your product catalog into ads automatically. The difference is when the shopper sees them. Google Shopping answers a search query. Meta Advantage+ interrupts a social feed with a product the AI predicts you will like. ChatGPT feed ads appear below an AI answer, labeled as sponsored, when the conversation is about something you sell.
Here is the full side-by-side view.
| Factor | ChatGPT feed ads | Google Shopping | Meta Advantage+ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopper mindset | Asking and comparing | Searching to buy | Scrolling and discovering |
| Funnel stage | Middle (consideration and decision) | Bottom (ready to buy) | Top and middle (awareness to purchase) |
| Where ads appear | Below ChatGPT answers, labeled sponsored | Search results, Shopping tab, AI Mode, YouTube, Discover | Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Audience Network |
| Targeting | Conversation context, product filters, country only | Search terms, audiences, location, device, remarketing | AI audience (your inputs are suggestions) |
| Feed source | OpenAI Ads Manager (upload, SFTP or API) | Google Merchant Center | Meta Commerce Manager catalog |
| Typical CPC | About $3 to $5 | About $0.80 to $4 for most ecommerce | About $1 to $2 |
| Measurement maturity | Early (pixel and Conversions API) | Very mature (GA4, Enhanced Conversions) | Mature (pixel, Conversions API) |
| Competition today | Low | High | High |
| Best for | Considered purchases and early-mover reach | Capturing buyers who already know what they want | Visual products and scaling new customers |
CPC ranges are directional 2026 benchmarks from OpenAI’s Help Center, WebFX and industry reports. Your costs will vary by category and competition.
How does each platform decide when to show your product?
Each platform reads a different kind of intent signal. That signal decides which products show up, and it should shape how you write your feed.
Google Shopping: the search query
Google matches the words a shopper types to your product titles, descriptions and attributes in Merchant Center. In 2026 this has become more AI-driven. Google began rolling out AI Max for Shopping campaigns, which uses your feed to match longer, conversational searches that standard Shopping used to miss. Google has also confirmed that Shopping ads now show in carousels inside AI Mode answers. If you want to sharpen this channel, our guide on how to optimize Google Shopping ads covers the feed and bidding basics.
Meta Advantage+: predicted interest
Meta does not wait for a search. Advantage+ sales campaigns (the new name for Advantage+ Shopping) use your pixel data and catalog to pick which product to show each person. Advantage+ is now the default for sales campaigns, and your audience inputs are treated as suggestions rather than hard rules. Only location and minimum age act as strict limits. The practical result: creative variety beats audience tweaking on Meta in 2026.
ChatGPT feed ads: the live conversation
ChatGPT has no keywords to bid on. It reads the conversation and, when the topic matches your catalog, it can serve a product from your feed below the answer. OpenAI describes it this way: you connect the feed to a campaign and let OpenAI pick an eligible product when the ad serves. You control which products are eligible using product sets, filtered by brand, category, price or custom labels.
This is a real shift. A shopper who types “best waterproof hiking boots for wide feet under $150” is telling ChatGPT far more than a two-word Google search. Products with specific, honest descriptions have a better chance of matching that kind of detail.
How much does each channel cost in 2026?
ChatGPT clicks currently cost more than Meta clicks and roughly the same as, or more than, most ecommerce Google Shopping clicks. But cost per click is only half the story. What matters is cost per sale, and that depends on conversion rate, average order value and how well your tracking works.
Typical ecommerce cost per click in 2026:
- ChatGPT feed ads: about $3 to $5 per click.
- Google Shopping: about $0.80 to $4 per click for most ecommerce categories.
- Meta Advantage+: about $1 to $2 per click on average.

Can you use one product feed for all three platforms?
Yes, and you should. OpenAI’s feed format was built to feel familiar to anyone who runs Google Shopping, and Meta catalogs use almost the same field names as Google. The catch is that each platform names a few fields differently and ChatGPT asks for some seller details the others do not.
We mapped the core fields so your developer or feed tool can build all three from one source catalog:
| What it is | Google Merchant Center | Meta catalog | ChatGPT (OpenAI) feed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unique product ID | id | id | item_id |
| Product name | title | title | title |
| Description | description | description | description |
| Product page URL | link | link | url |
| Main image | image_link | image_link | image_url |
| Price | price | price | price (format: 79.99 USD) |
| Stock status | availability | availability | availability (in_stock / out_of_stock) |
| Brand | brand | brand | brand |
| Variant grouping | item_group_id | item_group_id | group_id |
| Campaign labels | custom_label_0 to 4 | custom_label_0 to 4 | ads_metadata.custom_label_0 |
| ChatGPT-only fields | Not needed | Not needed | seller_name, seller_url, return_policy, target_countries, store_country, is_ads_eligible |
Two differences cause most ChatGPT upload errors. First, the price must include the currency code in one field, such as 89.00 USD. Second, the is_ads_eligible field must be set to true for every product you want to advertise. Products without it simply never show.
Write descriptions for conversations, not just keywords
Google feed titles are often packed with keywords. That still works on Google. For ChatGPT, the description matters more, because the AI is matching your product to a detailed question. Include who the product is for, the problem it solves, materials, sizing and use cases. This is the same thinking behind our guide on optimizing your website for AI Overviews and LLM answers: clear, specific facts get picked up by AI systems.
How do you set up product feeds on Shopify, Magento and WooCommerce?
The setup effort depends almost entirely on your ecommerce platform. Google and Meta have mature integrations everywhere. ChatGPT integrations are newer, and your options vary a lot.
| Platform | Google Shopping | Meta Advantage+ | ChatGPT feed ads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify | Native Google and YouTube app | Native Facebook and Instagram app | App Store feed apps that sync your catalog in the OpenAI format. Easiest of the three platforms. |
| Magento / Adobe Commerce | Extensions or feed management tools | Meta extension or feed tools | Usually a custom export or feed-tool mapping, then SFTP upload and scheduled refreshes |
| WooCommerce | Google for WooCommerce plugin | Facebook for WooCommerce plugin | Plugins that export CSV, TSV or JSONL in the OpenAI feed format |
Shopify stores have the fastest path. Magento and Adobe Commerce stores usually need the most work, because product data often lives across configurable products, custom attributes and multiple store views. That is where a proper integration, rather than a one-time CSV export, saves real money. If you run Magento, our Magento development guide explains how the catalog is structured. WooCommerce owners can see our WooCommerce development guide.
The ChatGPT feed setup, step by step
Create your Ads Manager account
Sign up at ads.openai.com, add your logo, billing details and business verification. Ads will not serve until setup is complete. Our OpenAI Ads Manager guide walks through this part.
Create a feed and connect SFTP
Name the feed, choose the countries it covers and set up SFTP access with a password or SSH key. Files go in the SFTP root folder with no subfolders.
Upload a sample, then the full catalog
Start with a small sample to catch errors. Retailers are reportedly asked for a 100-product sample before connecting a full catalog. Then check upload history for rejected rows.
Build product sets
Filter your catalog by brand, category, price or custom label. For example, one ad group for bestsellers and one for high-margin items.
Create the campaign and ad template
Choose impressions, clicks or conversions as the objective. Note that the objective and linked feed cannot be changed later. The ad template fills in title, description, price and image from the feed automatically.
Keep prices and stock in sync
Use OpenAI’s Delta API for quick price and stock updates, and full SFTP uploads for new products or image changes. An out-of-stock product that still shows as available wastes budget and hurts trust.
How is performance measured on each platform?
This is where the channels differ the most, and where many “ChatGPT ads are cheaper” claims fall apart. Cheap clicks mean nothing if you cannot prove they turned into sales.
Our advice: before spending a dollar on ChatGPT, install its pixel and Conversions API, and tag every ChatGPT landing URL with UTM parameters. That way you can check results in GA4 and your store backend, not just inside Ads Manager.
Which channel should you choose?
For most online stores, the answer is not either/or. It is about the right order and the right budget split. Use this quick guide to decide where to lean.
| If your store… | Lean toward | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sells products people already search for by name | Google Shopping | Captures ready-to-buy demand at scale |
| Sells visual, impulse or lifestyle products | Meta Advantage+ | Creates demand people did not know they had |
| Sells considered purchases that need research (gear, electronics, home, B2B supplies) | ChatGPT feed ads | Shoppers ask ChatGPT to compare options before buying |
| Has fewer than 50 purchases a week | Google first, then test ChatGPT | Meta’s AI may not get enough data to learn |
| Has a large catalog with clean data | All three | One feed can power every channel with little extra work |
A starting budget split
This is the split we typically suggest as a starting point for an established store already running Google and Meta. It is a test framework, not a rule. Adjust it every month based on cost per sale in your own data.
Suggested starting split of your product ad budget:
- Google Shopping / Performance Max: 50%
- Meta Advantage+ sales campaigns: 38%
- ChatGPT feed ads (test budget): 12%
If ChatGPT delivers a cost per sale within about 20% of your Google Shopping average after 30 to 60 days, move more budget into it. If it is far behind, pause, improve your descriptions and product sets, and test again next quarter. The platform is changing fast enough that a second test often looks very different from the first.
What are the risks and limits of ChatGPT feed ads right now?
ChatGPT is promising, but it is still a beta product. Go in with clear eyes.
The upside of that last point: early advertisers learn the channel while competition is thin. Industry trackers also reported in early September 2026 that ChatGPT shopping results now favor brands with connected product feeds. Even if you do not buy ads yet, getting your feed ready protects your visibility.
Your 30-day plan to test all three
Week 1: Audit your feed
Fix missing images, wrong prices, thin descriptions and missing brands. Add custom labels for margin, bestseller status and season. Our checklist on optimizing product pages for higher rankings helps here, since your feed pulls from those pages.
Week 2: Set up tracking everywhere
Confirm GA4, the Meta pixel and Conversions API, and the ChatGPT pixel and Conversions API all record the same purchase event. Add UTMs to every campaign.
Week 3: Launch a focused ChatGPT test
Pick 20 to 100 products with healthy margins and strong reviews. Run a clicks campaign at the recommended $3 to $5 bid with a budget you can afford to learn with.
Week 4: Compare cost per sale, not cost per click
Line up each channel’s cost per purchase and average order value. Scale what works, and rewrite the descriptions on products that got clicks but no sales.
