Agentic commerce for Magento, WooCommerce and BigCommerce stores is a very different project from agentic commerce on Shopify. On Shopify, showing up in AI shopping assistants is close to a settings change. On the other three platforms, you or your developers have to add some of the plumbing yourselves.
That plumbing is built on two open protocols. Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) powers buying inside Google AI Mode and Gemini. OpenAI and Stripe’s Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) powers product discovery in ChatGPT. Both let an AI agent read your catalog, build a cart and hand the shopper a checkout without scraping your website.
This guide covers where Magento, WooCommerce and BigCommerce each stand, which protocol to support first, and the steps we follow when we make a non-Shopify store ready for AI shopping agents. If you want the bigger picture first, our complete guide to AI in ecommerce covers the wider shift.
What does “agent-ready” mean for a non-Shopify store?
An agent-ready store is one an AI shopping agent can find, understand and buy from directly. In practice, that comes down to three things.
- The agent can read accurate product data: titles, attributes, prices, stock and shipping rules, from a feed or catalog API.
- Your store publishes a discovery profile that tells agents what they are allowed to do. For UCP, this is a small JSON file at
/.well-known/ucpthat lists capabilities like search, cart, checkout and order status. - Your store exposes checkout endpoints that accept an agent-built cart and a payment token, then create a real order using your own prices and stock.
Shopify merchants get all three from the platform. Shopify co-developed UCP and, through its Agentic Storefronts, makes eligible stores discoverable in ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Mode. On Magento, WooCommerce and BigCommerce, some or all of it has to be added.
UCP vs ACP: which protocol should you support first?
For most Magento, WooCommerce and BigCommerce merchants, the sensible order is UCP first for checkout, while keeping your products discoverable in ChatGPT through a clean feed. The reason is simple. OpenAI has scaled back in-chat Instant Checkout in favor of sending shoppers to the merchant’s own site, while UCP checkout is live with US retailers inside Google AI Mode and Gemini.
You don’t have to choose one forever. A single store can support both, and many should. It helps to know that UCP and ACP are only two of roughly five competing standards in this space. The others (Google’s AP2, Visa’s Trusted Agent Protocol and Mastercard Agent Pay) mostly deal with payments and are handled by your payment provider rather than your store.
| UCP (Universal Commerce Protocol) | ACP (Agentic Commerce Protocol) | |
|---|---|---|
| Backed by | Google and Shopify, with Walmart, Target, Etsy, Wayfair and 20+ partners | OpenAI and Stripe |
| Where it runs | Google AI Mode, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot Checkout | ChatGPT |
| What it covers | Discovery, cart, checkout and post-purchase | The checkout conversation between agent and merchant |
| How agents find you | A manifest at /.well-known/ucp plus your product feed | Your product feed, with capabilities agreed per checkout |
| Payments | Any provider, often paired with Google’s AP2 | Stripe Shared Payment Token |
| Checkout today | Live with US retailers and expanding | Limited; mostly discovery with a handoff to your site |
You’ll also hear about MCP (Model Context Protocol). It isn’t a checkout protocol. It is the general way AI agents connect to tools and data, and UCP can use it under the hood. Our business guide to MCP explains it in plain English.
Where do Magento, WooCommerce and BigCommerce stand today?
BigCommerce is furthest along. Magento has the strongest APIs but the biggest gap between what has been announced and what has shipped. WooCommerce relies entirely on third-party plugins. Here is our read of each platform, with Shopify included as a benchmark. Support is changing quickly, so check each vendor’s latest release notes before you scope a project.
| Platform | Built-in UCP / ACP | Main gap | Quickest route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify | Yes, on by default | Product data quality | Clean up the catalog and enable channels |
| BigCommerce | UCP endorsed; ACP through Stripe | Logged-in buying and self-serve feed exports still rolling out | Use native MCP features, add a UCP profile, enrich feeds |
| Magento / Adobe Commerce | Promised, not in core yet | No native UCP module | A custom UCP module on top of GraphQL |
| WooCommerce | No | Plugin quality varies; security is on you | A vetted plugin plus payment and feed setup |
How do you set up agentic commerce for Magento?
Right now, the practical way to make a Magento store agent-ready is a custom module that adds UCP endpoints on top of Magento’s GraphQL and REST APIs, rather than waiting for Adobe. Adobe has announced that Adobe Commerce will support both UCP and ACP, and it has since added a Commerce MCP server and developer agent. Native UCP support still isn’t part of the platform core, though, and we haven’t seen a production-ready native module yet.
The good news is that Magento suits this kind of work well. Its GraphQL API already handles cart, product and checkout operations. Its multi-store setup also lets you publish a separate agent profile for each brand, region or B2B catalog. For B2B stores, the most valuable piece is identity linking, where an agent acts as a known company buyer with negotiated pricing. Repeat orders against a negotiated catalog are exactly the kind of routine purchase agents handle well.
One warning before you start. Agent checkout endpoints are open to the internet, so check that your Magento version still receives security patches under Adobe’s Commerce lifecycle policy. If it doesn’t, upgrade first. Our Magento security best practices cover what to lock down.
When our Magento development team builds this, we keep the UCP profile and checkout endpoints in a standalone module. That way it can be swapped for Adobe’s native version when it ships, without touching the rest of the store.
How do you make a WooCommerce store agent-ready?
WooCommerce has no built-in UCP or ACP support, so the answer is a plugin. Several are now listed on WordPress.org. The UCP/ACP Agent for WooCommerce plugin is a good example. It publishes discovery profiles for both protocols, maps agent checkouts onto your real products, stock, coupons and shipping zones, and turns completed agent checkouts into normal WooCommerce orders. Its listing notes that ChatGPT checkout is still limited to merchants OpenAI has approved.
The plugin is only part of the job. You also need a payment setup that supports agent checkouts (usually Stripe) and a Google Merchant Center feed that marks which products are eligible. That same feed also drives paid placements in AI assistants, which we compare in ChatGPT feed ads vs Google Shopping vs Meta Advantage+.
Because agent checkout endpoints are public by design, check any plugin before you turn it on. Look for request signature checks, protection against duplicate orders, and price and stock validation on the server. Our WooCommerce developers can review, configure and harden the setup for you.
How do you make a BigCommerce store agent-ready?
On BigCommerce, start with what the platform already gives you. Its parent company, Commerce, has endorsed UCP, with plans to let shoppers buy inside Google’s AI surfaces while the merchant stays the merchant of record. BigCommerce has also released an MCP server to all stores, plus a Storefront MCP in early access. The Storefront MCP lets agents search your catalog, build a cart and generate a checkout link. Guest checkout works end to end today; logged-in shopping with personalized pricing is next.
Product data runs through Feedonomics, whose Agentic Catalog Exports format your catalog for ChatGPT, Google, Copilot, Perplexity and Amazon. Dell used it to prepare around 7,000 products for ChatGPT discovery. The service is enterprise-only for now, but mid-market stores can still publish their own UCP profile and improve their feeds by hand. Our BigCommerce development team handles both.
What are the steps to get any non-Shopify store agent-ready?
The work follows the same six steps on every platform. Only steps three and four change much between Magento, WooCommerce and BigCommerce.
- Audit your product data. Check GTINs, brand, variant attributes, dimensions, shipping and return policies, and live stock. Agents compare offers field by field, so a missing attribute means a missed recommendation.
- Fix your feeds and structured data. Make sure your Google Merchant Center feed and on-page Product schema agree. Price mismatches between the two are a common reason products get left out. Our guide to optimizing for AI Overviews and LLM answers goes deeper on structured data.
- Publish a discovery profile. Serve a UCP manifest at /.well-known/ucp that lists what agents can do and the keys used to sign requests. On WooCommerce a plugin does this; on BigCommerce it can be a file or an app; on Magento it’s a custom module.
- Build checkout and payments. Connect agent cart and checkout calls to your platform’s cart APIs, and add a payment handler that accepts delegated tokens, such as Google Pay through Stripe for UCP or Stripe’s Shared Payment Token for ACP.
- Tighten security. Check request signatures, block duplicate orders, rate-limit requests and always calculate prices on the server. Only create an order after payment succeeds, and never store card details.
- Track agent traffic on its own. Tag sessions and orders that come from AI agents so they show up as their own channel instead of disappearing into direct or referral traffic.
Should you wait for your platform or build now?
If your product data still has gaps, fix that first and leave the protocol work for later. Clean data is the first step no matter what, and it pays off in regular search and Google Shopping too.
If your data is in good shape, the answer depends on your platform. BigCommerce stores can turn on the native MCP features, publish a UCP profile and improve their feeds without much custom work. WooCommerce stores with a small team are usually best served by a well-reviewed plugin plus Stripe and Merchant Center setup. Magento and Adobe Commerce stores with a valuable catalog should build a swappable UCP module now and move to Adobe’s native version when it arrives.
Waiting has a cost. Every month your products aren’t readable by AI agents, Shopify competitors are being recommended in AI Mode and ChatGPT instead. For B2B sellers with negotiated pricing and frequent reorders, identity linking and saved carts that a buyer can approve are the features worth prioritizing.
Common mistakes to avoid
The first is betting on a single protocol. ChatGPT and Google use different standards, so supporting only one leaves a major AI channel dark.
The second is treating this purely as a checkout project. With in-chat checkout scaled back in ChatGPT, most of the near-term value comes from being discovered and handing the shopper smoothly to your own checkout.
The third is installing a plugin without checking it. Agent endpoints accept orders from the open internet, so signature checks and server-side price validation aren’t optional.
The last is not measuring it. Without separate tracking, orders from AI agents look like direct traffic, and the channel never gets the budget it deserves.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Magento support agentic commerce?
Adobe has committed to supporting both UCP and ACP in Adobe Commerce, but native UCP support isn’t built into the platform core yet. Magento stores can become agent-ready now with a custom module or extension that adds UCP endpoints on top of Magento’s GraphQL and REST APIs.
Can WooCommerce stores sell through ChatGPT and Google AI Mode?
Yes, through third-party plugins. WooCommerce has no built-in support, but plugins on WordPress.org now publish UCP and ACP discovery profiles and turn agent checkouts into normal WooCommerce orders. ChatGPT checkout is still limited to approved merchants, so most WooCommerce stores should focus on discovery in ChatGPT and UCP checkout in Google.
Is BigCommerce ready for agentic commerce?
BigCommerce is the most advanced platform after Shopify. It has endorsed UCP, released an MCP server to all stores, and offers a Storefront MCP in early access, plus Feedonomics Agentic Catalog Exports for enterprise merchants. Logged-in shopping and self-serve exports are still rolling out.
Should I implement UCP or ACP first?
For most non-Shopify stores, start with UCP for checkout, because UCP checkout is live in Google AI Mode and Gemini while ChatGPT has scaled back in-chat checkout. Keep your products discoverable in ChatGPT through a clean feed, and add ACP checkout if you become an approved merchant.
What is the /.well-known/ucp file?
It’s the UCP discovery manifest: a small JSON file on your domain that tells AI agents which commerce actions your store supports, such as catalog search, cart, checkout and order status, along with the keys used to sign requests. Agents read it before they try to buy from you.
Do I need to move to Shopify to get agentic commerce?
No. Shopify makes it easier out of the box, but Magento, WooCommerce and BigCommerce stores can reach the same AI channels by adding a protocol layer. Replatforming only makes sense if you were already considering it for other reasons, since a migration is a much bigger project than a UCP integration.
