BackyardBargain – SEO Case Study

Background :

It all started in 2007 when Backyardbargain.com went live online selling outdoor décor. Backyardbargain.com manages all aspects of the supply chain: product design, development, manufacturing and distribution. But 1½ years later the site revenue was dismally low. “We can process and ship 500 Website orders in 2 hours, we have a state-of-the-art infrastructure and huge inventory – now all we need is orders” said Vinod Jain, president of BackyadBargain.com.

Approach :

Our professional staff at Commerce Pundit employed our detailed competitive analysis of Backyardbargain.com’s top competitors’ websites, focusing on number of SKUs, pricing, shipping charges, checkout flow, site visibility and conversion rates. Then we compared these analytic results to Backyardbargain.com. And we found the problems.

First, shipping charges weren’t visible until checkout, and those charges averaged 30% of the total order. But that’s not all Commerce Pundit’s analysis uncovered.

  • The average industry conversion rate was 5% - 6%, but Backyardbargain.com had just a 2.8% conversion rate.
  • Bounce rate on the page was 20% - 25% higher than industry standard.
  • Average time on the Website 3:58 minutes, much lower than its competitors’ average of 8:25 minutes.

Results :

Commerce Pundit’s specialized analysis clarified the specific changes Backyardbargain.com needed to make, so we created a detailed marketplace management plan and implemented it.

First, we needed to make shipping charges easy to find. We introduced low flat-rate shipping charges and a one-page checkout system. Customers could now find out shipping charges right away, and with one-page checkout could get through the check-out process much faster. And that meant happier customers.

Next, to make flat rate shipping charges fiscally realistic, we adjusted product prices to allow shipping charges to drop to just 8% - 10% of the total order. And that meant happier owners.

Finally, to increase average time on the site we introduced loss leaders in what we knew were popular categories. And that meant everyone was happier.
